CIMA NEWSLETTER: Monthly analysis of operational and strategic illicit trade events in Latin America, developed through the Central for Investigation, Monitoring and Analysis of Illicit Trade (CIMA).
🚨 June confirmed a concerning trend: illicit trade in Latin America is evolving through increasingly sophisticated criminal networks, the use of digital channels, and financial schemes designed to conceal illicit proceeds.
During the month, CIMA identified operations highlighting the growing integration of smuggling, money laundering, and e-commerce, as well as significant institutional advances aimed at strengthening efforts to combat this phenomenon.
📌 Key developments this month:
Argentina: A study estimated losses of nearly USD 2.3 billion to the state in 2025 and warned of the growing use of e-commerce as a channel for distributing smuggled goods.
Chile: Operation Tokyo dismantled a structure linked to the Tren de Aragua that allegedly laundered approximately USD 85 million through the financial system and crypto-assets.
Colombia: The approval of the new Customs Sanctions Regime strengthens legal certainty and the State's capacity to combat smuggling.
Criminal organizations no longer rely solely on border routes. Today, they combine digital platforms, virtual assets, shell companies, and transnational networks to expand the reach of their operations.
